EAST LODGE GALLERY IN JANUARY 2024
submissions will close on Thursday 28th December at 8pm.
Judith Perry, Eleanor Allitt, Julie Law, Celine Llewellyn-Jones, Colin Purdy
Melissa Fathers, Chris Freegard-Elmes and Paul MorganPrivate View to be held on Sunday 26th November from 12 to 3:30pm
Judith lives in Radford Semele but has spent many winters in the village of Torrox in Malaga Province in Andalucia where she has had a house for twenty years. The culture, climate and landscape of Southern Spain have had a profound influence on her work.
Through photography, iPad drawings, mixed media paintings and mosaic panels, Judith has tried to capture the vibrant colour and light of this area which she loves so much.
Also available is her recipe collection – a photographic journey round some of Andalucia’s most scenic corners and beautiful food, combined with recipes for vegetarian dishes inspired by the best ingredients of Southern Spain.
A recent course in Land Art Photography using a Smartphone has led to a series of images about the local Warwickshire landscape.
ELEANOR ALLITT
Eleanor’s aim is to produce something remarkable and beautiful using humble resources.
To make the beads Eleanor gradually developed a material, based on eggboxes, with the resulting papiermaché is versatile and hardwearing. It is receptive to many decorative techniques, indeed, she is always experimenting with new ways of applying colour and texture.
The faded and battered colours of ancient Greek frescos have also influenced her, and Eleanor is endlessly drawn to the age-old fragments and imperfections of these works, as well as the glimpses into lives long passed which these works offer.
Birds offer another source of inspiration as they indicate a journey through time and space, as well as showing their wild freedom.
Sharing her discoveries with others is always rewarding, especially when Eleanor’s students are so surprised and delighted by what they have made.
Julie is a self taught artist and photographer. Julie began dabbling with art when her children were small. Two of her five children have autism and ADHD. Having down time with paints, pens, and clay, was calming, for all of them. She just carried on.Julie loves experimenting and seeing how things will turn out. She enjoys crossing the realms of art and photography together. Colour and view point, tend to be her favourite mix, finished off with a lovely resin pour.
Celine works primarily with different kinds of black ink applied with Chinese brushes and homemade mark-making tools, on Japanese and Nepalese natural fibre paper. Now and then she augments these with subtle colour using pencils, or other dry media.
The paper Celine uses encourages the ink to feather, separate and create surprising effects which trigger memories and require me to collaborate rather than control.
Celine’s starting point is often the Warwickshire landscape, augmented by imagination and a love of gestural drawing, so that the final work is as much as celebration of mark making, pattern, ephemeral light and contrast, as it is about something specific or tangible.
wood found locally, even from his own garden.
Melissa’s art journey began during lockdown. She needed an escape and found an online course in Land Art Photography using a Smartphone, hosted by Ellie Rose through Adult Community Learning. Melissa hasn’t looked back!
Who would have known that the little device in your pocket could create a wonderland of creation!
An eclectic, abstract adventure.
Mixed media has, along with her photography, started another journey and a very fascinating path. Still lots more to experiment with. The journey will continue….
Art in its various forms has been part of Chris’s life for as long as he can remember. After a career in HM Forces, Chris studied Art and Philosophy, and subsequently a PGCE in Art.After teaching both ‘O’ and ‘A’ levels for nearly 10 years Chris retired early and decided to develop his own practices, predominantly painting. Chris also draws, prints and works with 3 dimensional materials.
A major influence has been private tuition from Robert O Lenkiewicz, a celebrated British artist. Robert was generous with his time and knowledge whilst Chris was studying art. Chris took so much from this experience, not only from an artistic point of view, but also as a way of living which has provided an essential touchstone ‘a philosophy for art and a philosophy for life’.
Chris’s primary focus has been figurative work and He is now exploring landscapes, abstract representations and purely graphic pieces afresh. Chris has exhibited at The Herbert Gallery (Coventry), Plymouth Art Centre and here at the Gallery most recently.
Chris works in a range of materials, mainly oils and acrylics.
Paul Morgan is an artist based in Worcestershire, UK, known for his fine art capturing energy and light through various mediums like acrylic paint on canvas, watercolours, and mixed media sculptures.Inspired by the natural beauty of the Worcestershire countryside, his childhood was spent drawing with his father which greatly influenced his artistic path. This lead him to create pieces that encapsulate the essence of the surrounding landscapes and natural beauty.
LSA ART ROOM FOR THE MONTH OF NOVEMBER 2023
Julie originates from the northeast of England, and after achieving her degree in Fine Art at Central, St Martin’s in London, came to settle in Warwickshire.
The depiction of movement and energy is a constant theme within her artwork, although the subject matter and media used often vary. Julie is a painter, printmaker, and photographer, and like most artists, uses whatever media is best suited to reveal her vision and express her voice.
The portrayal of the female figure is a recurring theme: how they interact with their environment, whether jumping in the sea or dancing. She may depict this more realistically, using oils or acrylic, or use homemade brushes and inks in a looser, more abstract manner to render the sensuous and liberating movements of a figure.
As a photographer, Julie likes to work with the female figure and projection, layering onto the figure images and text whilst getting the model to react to this situation with evocative body language. These shots are often starting points for more abstract artwork, again capturing the dynamism of the figure. She often uses texture and layers to interpret the atmosphere and mood.
Whatever her subject matter, Julie is focused on capturing the essence of the pose, the emotion of the situation, and the finer qualities of light. Her images begin as a drawing from life or her photographs, which are often then abstracted, using various media, including Photoshop, watercolours, acrylics, oils, mixed media, mono printing, etchings and lino. Most of her work retains some detail but also a recognition of the media used, and she allows the paint to drip, interact and become part of the composition.

Sue Southern had her painting *Pride of Place” selected for the “Discerning Eye” exhibition and it is being shown at the Mall Galleries in London from the 16th to 26th November.
Sue said that her painting was inspired by the mountain of cow parsley growing in an orchard of plum trees.
Sue was one of the 25% of open entries out of the 350 plus artists selected from 6,500.
What a great achievement [and it sold as well!] More about the Discerning Eye Exhibition can be found on the link. https://new.artopps.co.uk/opportunities/discerningeye
