Warwick District Council is having open day at Oakley Wood Crematorium on 9th May, coinciding with a national event “Dying Matters”, which is promoted by Hospice UK and aimed at giving people the opportunity to talk about death, dying, and bereavement.
The main focus of the event will be tours of the grounds, the chapels and the crematory. Refreshments will be on offer and visitors will be encouraged to ask questions about what happens at the crematorium, or to talk about their experiences of funerals.
A current project in partnership with Warwick Hospital midwifery is the creation of a family-friendly remembrance area, The Little Oaks Garden – somewhere that will be welcoming for parents and siblings.
This new garden will be officially opened on 9th May. The crematorium is in ancient woodland, so the garden will fit into that landscape, and one of the elements is benches that will contain rocks/stones that will provide an ideal habitat for insects that support birds and wildlife.
The workshop will provide an opportunity for families to paint rocks that can be placed into the benches, or taken home. It will be free to participate.
Warwick District Council is looking for an artist to support participants in painting rocks in memory of their loved one. There is funding available to pay for the artist’s time and materials.
