The Queen Esther Cape/Artwork

The Esther project is a gender-specific initiative dedicated to supporting women dealing with mental health challenges, escaping domestic abuse, overcoming addiction, transitioning from prison, or facing homelessness.

The Esther Project runs a weekly programme of activities – The Women of Worth (WOW) programme – designed to reduce isolation and loneliness and offer a safe space for sharing stories, a key part of a journey of recovery.

To celebrate women – all they are and can be – the project QUEEN is craft-based – where the Esther women, assisted and supported by other local women’s organisations, will make and assemble a magnificent cape covered with crochet and patchwork hearts and flowers,. In addition to the weekly Esther group sessions, drop-in workshops have been held for women to come along to add their creative contributions, and over 1000 crochet and patchwork hearts and flowers have now been created!

Thanks to the support of the LSA, the Esther project has been allocated a space in the Art Room studio/workshop area in the Royal Priors to work on completing the garment.

Judith Perry along with a small team of volunteers will be assembling the vibrant and colourful Queen artwork on the following dates: 9, 11, 15, 16, 18, 22, 24, 26, 29, 31 July and 1 August

The Queen project exemplifies how craft and creativity can empower individuals, while building links with the wider community. The project brings together women from diverse backgrounds, fostering a sense of belonging and breaking down barriers between age groups, skill levels and social experience. Craft activities like crochet and patchwork promote relaxation and offer mental health benefits. Participants gain a sense of pride and accomplishment by contributing to a visible and meaningful art installation. In modern slang, “Queen” is a term of empowerment, admiration and respect often referring to someone who exudes confidence, strength and excellence…
