CHANGES on the LSA BOARD of TRUSTEES

There have been some recent changes to the make-up of the Board of Trustees.

A big thank you to our outgoing board members
Don Mason, who has served as Chair of the Board since December 2022, has resigned, along with Chris Freegard-Elmes, Tamar Groeneveld and Kay Matthews. All have given considerable energy and expertise to the LSA and have worked hard on behalf of members, and we would like to thank them for their dedication and significant contribution to the work of the LSA.

There are now four trustees on the Board. You can read more about them below. To provide continuity, Sue and Alessia are taking on the roles of Co – Chair, while John is covering the treasurer role and Ed is membership secretary.
Board members are already involved in the day to day workings of the LSA and so they will be known to some of you already. They will be out and about in the coming weeks to meet more of you.

The Board is keen that everyone knows who they are and how to contact them.

Please click on link below to access their information.

EAST LODGE GALLERY – JULY EXHIBITION

CARLA HOLLAND

Carla completed the Drawing and Painting course with Jo Humphreys and has also enjoyed a Mixed Media course with Ellie Rose.  She is retired having been a Coordinator for Primary School aged children with Special Educational Needs.  She says, “I find painting very meditative, and I love experimenting with colour.”

JENNY FORDYCE

Jenny carried out a variety of occupations during her working life, including, mechanical and electrical engineering, administration and Information Analysis.  She is now retired.  She says, “I love to observe the light and colour on everything around me, and I try to capture what I see, losing myself in painting.”

JILL DIXON

Jill joined the group after having been painting on her own using oils, acrylics, pastels and watercolour.  She is a retired Nurse Practitioner.  She says, “I try to capture the interplay of light and colour in my paintings using different media.”

PAT ILLINGWORTH

Pat joined us in the second year of the watercolour course.  She is retired after 45 years in nursing.  She says, “I love to paint the world as I see it, trying to portray different settings, light, shape and texture.”

TASHLIMA SHARIFF PALASH

Tashlima studied acrylics for two years with Nicola Richards, and a Land Art Photography course with Ellie Rose.  She works with Primary School aged children with Special Educational Needs.  She says, “Art is a good form of relaxation and allows me to focus on the present, leaving any worries behind.”

GUY CHAPMAN

I’m a self-taught artist with an eye for detail!  During the 90s whilst working for a record company I drew portraits for some famous musicians and, fast-forwarding to 2016 I became a full-time artist.
The concept of my artwork is to stimulate the imagination by designing a visual “story without words” for individual interpretation.  I like quirky unusual ideas, fantasy “other worlds” and steampunk, it’s a feast for the imagination!  I am inspired by CS Lewis and Tolkien, amongst others, whose works have stimulated my own creativity.
I have a particular interest in encouraging young people to explore their own creativity and have published a book entitled “Use Your Imaginaria!” to help kids realise their creative potential, and am working on its sequel.

ALL VOLUNTEERS MEETING ON 18TH JULY AT 5:00pm AT ST. PATRICKS CLUB, OFF ADELAIDE ROAD CAR PARK

The new trustees want to meet all our volunteers in the relaxing atmosphere of St Patricks club on the 18th July at 5:00pm. Firstly to thank them for all their hard work, passion, and dedication in making LSA a successful organisation as well as getting their views about shaping the future.

The trustees want to hear what you think works well, what’s important to you about being an LSA member and a volunteer,  and what we can do differently to shape the future. This is just the start of our new trustees engaging with our volunteers, members and other stakeholders so please come along and help in shaping the future of LSA.

Please come along if you can. If you aren’t yet volunteering but would like to know more then please come. We are looking for more volunteers to help and we need expertise from graphic designers and social media and web experts, amongst other things!

Art in the Park – DEADLINE (Sunday 9th July)

We need all LSA artists who wish to apply for exhibiting with LSA at Art in The Park 2023 to express their interest by Sunday 9th July (by midnight).

We have provisionally booked an LSA spot for Art in the Park 2023. We need to understand if there is enough interest among artists before we make a final commitment and we move forward planning the event and paying the fees.

For anyone who doesn’t know, this is a popular arts festival held in Jephson and Mill Gardens in Leamington Spa. It’s on Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th August 10am-6pm. More than 200 artists are taking part at the event and it attracts around 30,000 visitors each year. You can find more details on the https://www.artinpark.co.uk/

We plan to hold an LSA members exhibition using the same format we use at the ArtRoom monthly exhibitions.

There will be an Open Call for applications around mid-July and following that, a selection process. The conditions to exhibit will be

  • Small works ONLY – Your piece must be no larger than 40cm by 40 cm (including frame)

  • You must be able to drop off your work on Friday 4th August at the park (we will provide a time for this when we know more) and collect it on Sunday between 6pm and 6.30pm if it hasn’t sold.

  • You must commit to stewarding in the marquee for a minimum of 1 hour over the weekend

  • There will be a £10 hanging fee and the LSA will take 20% commission on sales.

Please express your interest ONLY if you are able to meet all the conditions above.

Many of you will have your own stands, but for those who don’t this is a great opportunity to promote your work. The LSA will cover public liability insurance and the fee for the marquee.

PLEASE EXPRESS AN INTEREST BY SUNDAY 9th JULY 2023. to Alastair Gamble at co*******@gm***.com

A few days after receiving your provisional interest, we will  get in touch confirming if the  LSA will be able to move forward, and we will then invite submissions from all those who expressed an interest.

CO-MANAGER LSA ART ROOM & ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE

I was thrilled to hear my painting ‘Juxtaposition’ was accepted for the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists Summer Show 2023. I was invited to the Private View on the evening of Wednesday 14th June where I was presented with a ‘Highly Commended’ Award by the President of the RBSA, Viv Astlin OBE.

I was one of 5 exhibiting artists exhibiting out of 300 to receive an award that evening which is a fantastic achievement. Part of the opportunity the Award offers is to deliver an Artist Talk and present my work during the exhibition.

My painting ‘Juxtaposition’ is constructed from individually hand painted, stitched acrylic panels. I photograph each painting and digitally plan how to construct the new painting first before meticulously measuring, cutting and then stitching the panels using an industrial sewing machine. The new painting is then re-stretched back over the stretcher bars.

You can find me working in my permanent studio space at East Lodge and also at my temporary studio space within the LSA Art Room. Do pop in to say hello and see what I am up to.

The RBSA Gallery is an Artist led charity located in the historic Jewellery Quarter, just off St Paul’s Square in Birmingham. The Summer Show runs until Saturday 22nd July
