Bold and exciting new exhibitions by Julia Essex and John Lister

From Thursday 2nd February until Sunday 26th February 2023 East Lodge, opens from Thursday to Sunday each week from 11.00 am – 3.00 pm

My paintings explore the themes of power and poise in both dance and nature.  Ballet dancers train their whole lives to achieve power and poise in every gesture, leap, spin and pose and that is what I seek to capture.  The natural world is a combination of powerful growth and poised beauty.  My original paintings include dancers soaring through the air or captured at the moment of perfect balance in a classical pose, as well as paintings showing the power of waves or the poise of a calf standing in a sunlit field.  I hope my paintings and cards will inspire you and that you will find much to enjoy.

I’m basically just an old bloke trying to keep myself out of trouble!

After more than 40 years as a journalist focused on facts and words, I have turned to photography and painting in acrylics and oils as a new way to view and portray the world.

My photographs and paintings mostly focus on the colours, impression and feel of moving water and landscapes, and try to convey a sense of special times and places.

There are many photos that I am sharing publicly for the first time, depicting subject matter I could not improve upon with paint. The Cornish rockpool scenes I have chosen here are walked past every year by hundreds or thousands of people as they clamber across the rocks on Greenaway beach, near Polzeath at low tide – but few take the time to look downwards and marvel at the colours and shapes and the play of light and reflected sky on the moving water.
In my paintings my aim is to convey feeling and colour rather than detail.

You are invited for drinks and nibbles and to view both exhibitions on Saturday 4 February 2023 from 12.00 – 3.00pm.  Please come and chat to John and Julia and find out more about their art.
