Julie Swinsco is an artist who brings the energy and emotion of the urban environment to life through her vibrant work.
Julie lives in Stratford-upon-Avon; however, Julie spent many years in Birmingham, where the city's light, movement, and atmosphere deeply inspired her work. Whether depicting the shimmer of wet streets at night or the rush of traffic through neon-lit corners, Julie distils the heart of the city into emotive cityscapes.
She uses oils, mixed media, and inks to craft semi-abstract paintings that reflect the ever-changing nature of the urban environment.
Julie undertook her artistic training at Goldsmiths and Central Saint Martins in London. There, she focused on capturing the energy of her surroundings. Her studies also gave her a strong foundation in life drawing and movement. The themes she explored during her studies continue to influence her work today, whether she's painting the human form or the dynamic rhythms of a city.
Although heavily influenced by Birmingham, Julie also draws inspiration from other cities, such as London and Prague. Each city offers a fresh perspective and a different energy and colour palette, which she translates into paintings, capturing the unique energy she experienced.
In addition to painting, Julie is a skilled printmaker and photographer. Her photography often employs long exposures, achieving a sense of fluidity and movement in urban spaces — a feature she also incorporates into her paintings. Through her printmaking, she further explores textures and layers, adding an extra dimension to her work.
Julie's art focuses less on obvious architectural detail and more on capturing a city's essence. It is the exploration of emotions evoked through its light, movement, and atmosphere. Her work invites viewers to pause, to appreciate the familiar in a new light, turning ordinary moments into rich experiences brimming with colour, emotion, and depth.
