In this workshop, we’ll explore a range of compositional ideas and guidelines, arranging and lighting our still life setups using coloured backgrounds, reflective surfaces, and transparent elements. We’ll focus on creating interesting and unusual compositions, paying attention to shadow shapes and colour relationships. After sketching out our compositions on canvas, we’ll move on to painting—focusing on dynamic colour mixing, expressive brushwork, and effective techniques for painting shadows.
Materials provided: A selection of fruits (or vegetables) Coloured backgrounds
What to bring: Please bring a canvas or board (A4–A3), brushes, artist-quality paints (oils or acrylics), pen and pencil, a spotlight or anglepoise lamp (if you have one), palette knife, phone or iPad for photos, paper palette, a box to take your work home, a stay-wet palette (if you have one), and for oils only, a jar with low-odour thinners.
