Course outline:

This is an introduction to three dimensional soft sculpture. Participants will learn how to form a wire armature(frame), flesh out the sculpture using different wires and recycled newspaper. Add various surfaces to work into. Look at different techniques to cover the frame from using dissolvable material for feathers to scraps and threads to create texture and colour and various stitches to help with shape. This isn’t soft toy making but sculpting, using thread, fabric and wire.

Type of medium used within the workshop: Materials to be used are wire, newspaper, scraps of material, needles and threads. Also different yarns and other found materials

Materials provided: Wire; wire cutters and pliers; newspaper; scraps of material and different yarns; calico; doll needles; pictures of rats, birds, and dogs; and a small pamphlet to help finish the sculpture at home and provide further ideas.

Materials participants should bring: Hand sewing kit; scissors; a thimble (as it can be tough on fingers); and a selection of threads and cottons, if available.
