Painting Water in the Landscape (Julie Swinsco)

Location: LSA Art Room, Springboard Studios, Lower Mall, Royal Priors, Leamington Spa.

Using oils or acrylics, (bring good quality references), we can capture the translucency and dynamism of painting water.

Beginning with creating an interesting composition and looking at the values of your image, we will quickly progress to sophisticated colour mixing and experimenting with a variety of ways to apply the paint, to make you work sparkle and look fluid.

What to bring:

A4 paper to draw composition, Ruler, pencil, rubber, thin willow charcoal stick
Approx. size A3, primed canvas or board with quality images to work from.
A selection of artist’s quality paints; oils or acrylics eg. Windsor & Newton or Daler Rowney starter set.
Colours– (depending on your image)- Cerulean Blue, Pthalo Blue, Ultramarine, Viridian, Yellow Ochre, Burnt Sienna, Titanium White, Cadmium/lemon yellow. Cadmium Red, Permanent Rose/Crimson.
A selection of brushes –Hog hair are good for oils, or synthetic.
Different shaped brushes: flats and rounds, various sizes, from 1inch flats to size 10, 6 rounds.
Fan brushes are good for blending and a very fine ‘rigger’ brush is designed to do long thin lines (designed to paint the ‘rigging’ on a ship-not that you need to be painting one!!)
**For cheap, but quite reasonable quality synthetic brushes, try looking in the shop, Sostrene and Grene at the top of the Priories! (I would not recommend their paint however)
Palette knifes – again a few different shape and sizes.
Paper Palette and a box to take your work home in
Cling film is useful to wrap your palette up in to take home
Oils only: A jar/tin and some low odour thinners, NOT TURPENTINE, some rags or plenty of tissues to wipe brushes clean. Plastic pot for water for acrylics.
Old clothes, apron, trust me! acrylic doesn’t come off clothes when dry!

Optional extras:

‘Desk Easel’ – only if you have one
‘Liquin’ or painting medium if working in oils
‘Stay-Wet’ palette if working in acrylics

**Note: If you are a beginner and this list of paint/equipment is too expensive, let me know and I can bring extra and agree a price for what you use before hand.

Workshop Cancellation Policy

We understand that sometimes plans change. To ensure fairness and to support the smooth running of our workshops, please take note of our cancellation policy:

No Refunds
Once a booking has been made and paid for, we are unable to offer refunds for cancellations.
Transfer of Booking
If you are unable to attend a workshop, you may nominate someone else to take your place at no additional cost. Please inform us by email at least 24 hours prior to the workshop with the name and contact details of the person attending in your place.
Non-Attendance
If you do not attend and have not arranged for someone to attend in your place, your booking will be considered forfeited and no refund or transfer will be available.

Age Restrictions

This workshop is designed for and open to participants aged 18 years and over. A place may be booked for a young person aged 16 or 17, providing they are accompanied by a parent or guardian over 18 who is also booked and attending the workshop. Please view our safeguarding policy.
