Matthew Sugars

28/10/2026, 10:30 am - 22/11/2026, 3:30 pm

Matthew began his photographic journey working mainly in black-and-white, as this allowed him to produce prints in his home darkroom. He still enjoys creating prints the traditional way, though, since the introduction of digital photography and printing, he now works mainly in colour to capture different moods and subtleties in the landscape.

He’s drawn to the shapes, textures, and changing light found in both natural and built environments. Whether photographing mountains, coastlines, or architectural details, he aims to create calm, thoughtful images that invite viewers to pause and look more closely.

Matthew takes a patient, considered approach, returning to familiar places and waiting for the right moment when light and conditions align. Careful composition and attention to light are central to his process. Matthew has been an Associate of the Royal Photographic Society (ARPS) since 2013 and is currently working on a series of landscape images with the aim of attaining his Fellowship (FRPS).
