In this lovely, relaxing taster Session you will learn how to work with a selection of British Breed wools. Working with textile artist, Penny, you will identify some different wools and other fibres. You will be taught how to make a ball of wool using a traditional drop spindle. You will be making ‘Art Yarn’ so it will be thick, thin, wobbly, bobbly and finally slick and thin. It’s all about muscle memory which develops over time. However it makes fabulous textured wool for weaving.
Part way through the session, using an easy, small vintage wooden weaving loom, you will weave your wool to create a small mat or wall hanging. Use your new ‘art yarn’ fibre that you have just spun, or a selection of lovely commercial wools on a shuttle to create your piece!
In addition to basic weave, you will also learn how to make traditional Swedish Rya knots to add fringing. (They’re easy peasy!)
Type of medium used within the workshop: 100% wool, silk, commercial recyled acrylic wool, wooden sustainable equipment
Materials provided: All materials.
Materials participants should bring: A few favourite yarns but only if you wish.
