JOOST LOHMAN

I am a retired scientist, a poet, and a digital artist. In the latter role I combine my knowledge of mathematics with my skills in digital image processing to create abstract works of art by manipulation of an original digital photograph. The result presents the viewer with a new reality which they are free to explore with their own imagination. As a photographer I am instinctively drawn to the natural and urban landscape, and it is here that I most readily find the material for my work. I take my inspiration from simple compositions and often apply photographic techniques, such as Selective Focusing or Intentional Camera Movement, to simplify a scene further by making irrelevant detail invisible.

My processing workflow can best be described as a journey of discovery. While experimenting with a wide variety of techniques I set off to reveal new shapes and textures, until I arrive at a new and exciting geometry. Further fine tuning and adjustments to tonal values and the colour palette then takes me to the final image.

At my exhibition ‘Re-Imagined Photographs’ I will also show my face as a poet by bringing copies of my recent book of poetry ‘A Trail of Words’.

WHERE THE MOOD TAKES ME
Landscape Photography by KJ Matthews

If you have ever spent a day with me you will know I have to take in what is around me – whether it is the thrill of a seeing a blanket of bluebells, pointing out the obvious sunset or stopping on a walk to watch sunlight catch the hillside.  This exhibition is a glimpse of the moods and moments I delight in.
